What happens during dental implant surgery step by step

If you are thinking of getting dental implants but are feeling apprehensive about the process, then you have nothing to worry about. This is quite common among patients.

But the truth about the surgical process is far from what patients think. Today, thanks to advancements in dentistry, the process has become a predictable, comfortable, and routine procedure. A dental implant shouldn’t be seen as a complicated surgical process; rather, think of it as a combination of processes – namely, placing a titanium post, which acts as the new root for your teeth, an abutment, and lastly, a beautiful crown.

This is how Kayo Dentistry explains dental implants.

The Dental Implant Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

This surgical procedure of replacing the lost tooth is very predictable and biological in nature. Technology and anesthesia have played a significant role in making this process efficient, precise, and painless.

Let us take a look at what is involved at every stage of this procedure.

Step 1: Initial Consultation & Digital Treatment Planning

For successful implant placement, it is vital to conduct meticulous pre-surgical planning. Instead of using conventional X-rays, 3D CBCT or Cone Beam Computed Tomography scanning is used today. It enables the highest level of 3D visualization of the patient’s jawbone and the surrounding anatomy, including nerves.

This data allows for creating a digital image on which it is possible to perform the entire operation simulation on a computer. It is necessary for:

Step 2: Patient Comfort and Local Anesthesia

One of the biggest issues that concerns patients is pain during the operation. Nevertheless, local anesthesia procedures will help prevent any pain by blocking pain receptors in the treated zone before the start of the surgery.

Step 3: Surgical Placement of the Implant Post

Because of meticulous digital planning, the surgical phase for a single implant is highly efficient, often taking under an hour.

This streamlined surgical approach minimizes chair time, which directly reduces post-operative swelling and accelerates initial recovery.

Step 4: The Healing Phase

After this stage, there is a very important biological step that needs to happen, and this is known as osseointegration. This is when the living bone cells actually integrate with the artificial dental implant.

Osseointegration: The naturally occurring process by which living bone cells bond with the microscopic surface texture of a titanium rod to create a permanent tooth root replacement.

This time period usually takes a few months, but during this period, a patient will require temporary implants that cover the site of the actual implant, in case there are any aesthetic problems.

Step 5: Final Abutment and Crown Placement

Once the implant post is fully stabilized and integrated into the bone, the final restorative phase begins.
